Commander Habteyesus Berhanu
Born in Gojam, Dangla town in 1956; the eldest child in the family; attended both primary and secondary school at Dangla (1964-1975); joined the Ethiopian Police College (1977-1980); married and father of four and grandfather to one; presently Commander (retired), but works for a private organization; best known during college years for his stern disciplinary stance whenever he was rostered as a duty cadet in charge; otherwise he was among the larrikins or funniest of our course mates, whose humor often brought a smile to everyone’s face.

Commander Tesfahun Bekele
Born in 1957 EC in Arsi, Asella (now the Oromia Region of Ethiopia); the second child in the family (but rumor has it he may have another older sister from a naughty dad!); attended Ras Darge Primary School and Asella Secondary School; joined the Ethiopian Police College (1977-1980); and earned a BA Degree and Master of Economics Degree from Addis Ababa University. Tesfahun was a quiet achiever in his college years. He had escaped the turbulent years of the mid-1980s and did very well with his policing career and reached the Commander rank. He currently holds a very senior role with the Federal Civil Service Commission of Ethiopia. At the EPC, Tesfahun was a fine sportsman, an excellent footballer and was not too bad with basketball. Importantly, his imperturbable nature made him calm, relaxed, and a laid-back person.

Lieutenant Tadele Challa
Born in 1953 in the State of Showa (now the Oromia Region of Ethiopia); the eldest child in the family; attended primary at Ras Gobena Aba Dachew School; junior and secondary at Dej Azmach Geressu Duke Secondary School; joined the Ethiopian Police College (1977-1980); held several positions following graduation as a Team Leader of Fingerprints at the Ethiopian Police Head Quarters, Head of Legal Services in the then State of Illubabor, and Police Commander of Dembi Province. Tadele, like many members of the 23rd batch, joined the Ethiopian Military involuntarily during the dying moments of Mengistu’s regime. However, he returned to Police when the EPRDF took power in 1983 and held a range of leadership positions prior to his resignation in 1987. He then graduated with a law degree and has since been juggling family business and private practice as a lawyer. At Police College, Tadele was an extremely agile and unparalleled sportsman. He excelled in every sport and represented EPC in multiple events. Essentially, there was nothing that Tadele could not do. However, his celebrity did not earn him a pardon from ዘብጥያ, the infamous harsh disciplinary punishment of the EPC.

Sub-Lieutenant Eshetu Giref
Born in Addis Ababa in 1859 (EC) as the 2nd child in a family of five; attended primary school at Misrak Ber and secondary at Misrak High School; joined the Ethiopian Police College (1977-1980); and earned a degree in Computer Science, with a major in Computer Instruction and minor in Information Science. Eshetu was best known for his immense skills in football and represented EPC during those three years. As a young man of considerable emotional intelligence, Eshetu was also highly adept to the bureaucratic maze and professional success following graduation. He then held several important positions as Information Investigator at the Ethiopian Police Headquarters, and Intelligence Officer at the then Ministry of National and Public Security, to name a few. Like many of the 23rd graduates, Eshetu faced significant challenges and forced redundancy when the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front took power in 1991. He currently works for a non-government organization.

Getahun was an accomplished athlete during his college years and participated in 10,000m track & field events. One of the initial induction procedures at the Police College was to have our heads shaved, symbolically to remove our previous identity or persona so that with training and discipline we would be reborn into a life of military. It was then the young Getahun stood out from the crowd with his extremely shinny and oily head, which thereafter earned him the nickname ‘Wezu’ (ወዙ).
